Project Name: KÄlama Sutta Curtain Installation (Parametric Wavy Ceiling)
Location: Global Vipassana Pagoda, Borivali, Mumbai, India
Project Type: Museum Interiors / Spiritual Installation
Completion Year: 2022
Design & Fabrication: Inventaur Inc + Golden International
Commissioned By: Ajanta Pharma Pvt Ltd
Within the hallowed interiors of the Global Vipassana Pagoda, the KÄlama Sutta Area emerges as a serene experiential corridorācrafted not just as architecture, but as a spiritual interface.
This contemplative installation features silicon-coated glass fiber curtains suspended from a radial stainless steel rail system. These soft, resilient veils descend like whispers of clarityāfloating, swaying, and gently separating space without division.
Each curtain bears vertically inscribed Buddhist mantras, either heat-transferred or embroidered, embodying the essence of the KÄlama Sutta: a call to reflect, inquire, and realize truth through direct experience.
Before physical fabrication, a full digital visualization and demo video was presented to the client. This phase included:
Real-time light and material simulations
Spatial walkthroughs
Conceptual storytelling integration
Our approach stood out for its spiritual alignment, technical constructability, and immersive visual narrativeāsecuring trust and project approval.
A complete fabrication documentation set was prepared including:
Assembly sequences
Fixing and junction detailing
CNC-ready cut sheets
Tagging system for curtain IDs
Installation mapping
These drawings enabled seamless translation from model to build, with tolerances tuned for fabric behavior, hanging alignment, and spatial calibration.
Ā
The manufacturing phase for the KÄlama Sutta Area installation centered around the careful handling and customization of a specialized silicon-coated glass fiber fabricāa material chosen for its durability, safety, and refined visual quality.
Base Material: Woven glass fiber textile
Coating: High-performance silicone (dual-sided)
Weight: Approx. 450ā550 GSM
Color: Custom off-white / pale ivory to match spatial tone
Finish: Matte surface, anti-fray edges, soft hand feel
Fire Rating: Certified to withstand fire exposure for up to 2.5 hours
Smoke Emission: Zero smoke emission under combustion
Odor: No odor release during exposure to heat or flame
Burn Behavior: Self-extinguishing; does not propagate fire
Ash Formation: Burns clean and directly disintegrates to ash, without melting or dripping
Each curtain was laser-cut and edge-bound for precision and longevity. A concealed top-hem system was developed to ensure clean hanging without visible mechanical fixtures. Special attention was paid to maintaining the vertical drop of each unit to avoid distortion, ensuring uniform fall across the array.
Ā
The curtains were installed in a pre-measured radial configuration suspended from ceiling-mounted stainless steel rails. The embedded mantra columns were either printed via heat-transfer techniques or embroidered, depending on the panel type and required tactile effect.
Ā
Throughout the process, the manufacturing aimed to preserve the spiritual integrity of the designācreating a floating, breath-like presence in the space that guides the mind inward while maintaining world-class fire and safety standards.
Ā
The completed installation of the KÄlama Sutta Area transformed an interior segment of the Global Vipassana Pagoda into a serene, contemplative corridor, draped with translucent silicon-coated glass fiber curtains that floated gently from the ceilingāalmost as if breathing.
Ā
Each curtain bore columns of sacred mantras, intended to symbolically guide wandering souls and restless minds toward clarity and peace. As light filtered softly through the layered veils, the space achieved an ethereal qualityāa physical manifestation of spiritual guidance, referencing the essence of the KÄlama Suttaās message: encouraging oneās own path of inquiry and mindfulness.
Ā
The result was not only a spatial partition but an immersive spiritual gestureāa calm, acoustically softened, fire-safe environment that offered both visual drama and meditative stillness. Visitors walking through the installation experienced a quiet transition, where architecture served as a vessel for inner reflection and ancestral resonance.
Q1: What materials are used in this spiritual ceiling installation?
Silicon-coated glass fiber fabric with high fire-resistance and acoustic softness.
Q2: How are the mantras added to the curtain?
Through heat transfer printing or precision embroidery depending on panel type.
Q3: Is this installation permanent?
It is semi-permanent and fully maintainable with demountable ceiling rail systems.
Q4: Is it safe for public environments?
Yes. The fabric is fire-rated, non-toxic, smoke-free, and durable.
Q5: What does the KÄlama Sutta symbolize here?
It represents the practice of inner inquiry and experiential truthāmanifested in the design through light, rhythm, and spiritual text.
